HISTORY :
The poppy seeds used in foodstuffs are bluish-black in colour. Their origins lie in Asia Minor. In the East, the poppy is used as a spice in savoury dishes. It has been used to flavour bread in old Europe since the 2nd century. In France, the poppy seed is still little known, unlike in Eastern European countries such as Poland or Hungary, where it is used in pastries.
PROPERTIES :
Calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, zinc, fatty acids, vitamin B... The poppy combats bad cholesterol. Poppies are also relaxing. A small daily dose of poppies can only do you good.
COOKING :
Poppies are used mainly in the production of bread and biscuits. Their flavour, which is delicately reminiscent of hazelnuts, blends delightfully with dried fruit and explodes in the mouth when heated. If you want to broaden your taste horizons, take a look at Poland. Makowiec is a delicious poppy bun, and makotch is a poppy cake. The Poles process the poppy seed into a paste which is used as a filling for both these pastries. In Hungary, máklepény is made with poppy seed sugar. The equivalent of the Hungarian roll cake is màkos beigli. Now you have a new culinary challenge!
