HISTORY :

Gum Arabic is the oldest form of gum. Traces of this substance have been found and identified on Egyptian mummy bandages dating back to about 2650 BC.

It was during the 15th century that European navigators discovered this substance emanating from the wounds of certain trees of the acacia family on the coasts of Senegal and Mauritania.

France fought hard to acquire the main market for this commodity on the West African coast. England was also very interested in the trade in the heart of the Kordofan and Port Sudan region (Africa).

These two colonial powers (France and England) then developed the trade in this sap throughout Europe...

PROPERTIES :

In some countries, boiled gum arabic is served to women just after childbirth, but also as a treatment for skin diseases and wounds.

COOKING :

In the South, its freshness and sweetness can be found in orgeat syrup and pastis. In addition to its ability to thicken your savoury preparations, gum arabic is the must-have ingredient you need to buy for successful oriental pastries.
